Whitechapel

Whitechapel
Mark of the Blade
Metal Blade Records
release: 24 June 2016
Whitechapel seems to be a very successful band. Their Facebook page appears to have over one million likes. This is the first time that I listen to one of their albums. Whitechapel is a band with a modern sound in the general area of hardcore, emocore, djent, chugging coregrowling rock. They are marketed as death metal or extreme metal, but they certainly do not have much in common with any of the subgenres of death metal. Most of the time the growling sounds layered and the chugging guitars are dominant. The chugging/djent/core is by far the main thing that they do. They do a bit of variety: "Bring Me Home" is a ballad. It's a hardcore/emocore power ballad. They sound like a chunkier form of a punk band. In short, this band appears to be successful, but I don't know. They sound hip and modern and marketable. They have the short hair and the tattoos that the younger crowds like, it seems. On the other hand, if you hate anything that sounds like core and djent, definitely make sure to stay away from this band.
